The hard part

Where hiring slows down for hotels and motels.

  • Housekeeping is hardest to fill

Housekeeping is the department hotels most often report short-staffed. Every day a room attendant role sits open, the rest of the team covers the rooms.

  • The hotel never closes

Evenings, weekends and holidays are routine shifts. Applicants need to hear that up front, and you need to hear what they can cover.

  • Each role is its own hire

A housekeeper, a night auditor and a maintenance tech need different first rounds. Running all three by phone takes the whole week.

What we screen for

What hotels and motels screen for.

You choose which ones each job asks, and how much each counts.

  • “The work means pushing loaded carts and making beds all shift. Can you do that, with or without reasonable accommodation?”

A full shift of carts and beds is the job, so it asks about the work itself and nothing about health or past injuries.

  • “Have you worked in hotel housekeeping? About how many rooms did you clean per shift?”

Room counts vary by property and local rules, commonly around 13 to 16 per 8-hour shift, so experience at a similar pace tells you who’s ready.

Set up with you in early accessUsually: Strongly preferred
  • “For front desk and night audit: have you handled cash and worked in a hotel property management system?”

Night audits, payments and the property system are the daily work of the desk.

Set up with you in early accessUsually: Strongly preferred
  • “For front desk: which languages can you use with guests?”

Guest-facing roles are where language genuinely matters, so it’s fair to ask there, and only there.

Set up with you in early accessUsually: Nice to have
  • “For maintenance: do you have a Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification, or would you get one?”

Some states, such as Texas, require hotel pools to be overseen by a certified pool operator.

Hiring rules

What hotels and motels should know.

Rules for every job are in the fair hiring guide.

  • Set the English requirement role by role. The front desk may need more than housekeeping, and an accent alone isn’t a reason to turn down someone who communicates clearly.

Hotels hire for guest-facing and back-of-house roles, and each needs its own standard.

    EEOC: National origin discrimination guidance

  • Ask whether applicants can work the weekend and holiday shifts the job needs, not where or when they worship. If a shift conflicts with someone’s religion, talk through a swap before you say no.

Hotels run every weekend and holiday, which is when schedules and religious observance collide.

EEOC: Pre-employment questions about religionEEOC: Religious discrimination guidance

  • If your uniform rules don’t allow religious dress, like a head covering, look for an exception before you rule someone out.

Hotel staff wear uniforms, and the EEOC’s own example is an applicant turned away over a headscarf under a no-exceptions uniform rule.

Questions hotels and motels ask

Can GuavaHire screen housekeepers and front desk staff differently?
Yes, in early access. Each job asks its own questions, so a housekeeping opening and a night audit opening each get the right ones.
How many rooms should a housekeeper clean per shift?
It depends on the property and local rules. Studies and union contracts commonly put it around 13 to 16 rooms per 8-hour shift, and some cities cap it lower. Asking applicants about their pace at past hotels tells you a lot.
Can I ask applicants about their English?
Only where the job needs it. For front desk roles that talk with guests, it can be fair to ask; for housekeeping, it usually isn’t needed. GuavaHire interviews applicants in whatever language they write in either way.
When should I hire for the summer?
Through the spring. Hotel staffing builds toward a July peak, so post early: applicants who text in get their first interview right away, even overnight.
Can I hire for overnight shifts?
Yes. GuavaHire shares your schedule, overnight hours included, before it asks about availability, so applicants can say plainly whether nights work for them.

Your next great hire is already texting.
