The hard part

Where hiring slows down for cleaning companies.

  • Applicants text after hours

Cleaners answer your post when their own shift ends. By the time you call back the next day, some have moved on.

  • The same questions, every time

A car, experience, weekends, pets: you ask every applicant the same things before you know if they’re a fit.

  • Spanish-speaking cleaners

Many experienced cleaners would rather talk in Spanish. If your first round only happens in English, some of them never get to it.

What we screen for

What cleaning companies screen for.

You choose which ones each job asks, and how much each counts.

  • “Do you have regular access to a vehicle you can use to get to cleaning jobs?”

Homes are spread across your area, and a cleaner without a way to get there can’t take the job.

GuavaHire asks this todayUsually: Deal breaker
  • “What cleaning experience do you have?”

Homes, offices, vacation rentals or move-outs: the kind of cleaning matters as much as the years.

GuavaHire asks this todayUsually: Strongly preferred
  • “Are you comfortable working in homes with pets, and homes where smoking odors may be present?”

Many homes have pets. Asking up front avoids a mismatch on the first job.

GuavaHire asks this todayUsually: Strongly preferred
  • “Would you be comfortable completing a background check if you move forward?”

Cleaners work inside clients’ homes. GuavaHire asks about comfort only; the check itself comes later, with its own paperwork.

GuavaHire asks this todayUsually: Strongly preferred
  • “Do you have your own cleaning supplies or equipment, or are you willing to get them before starting?”

Some companies supply everything, and some ask cleaners to bring their own. Either way, it’s better settled early.

GuavaHire asks this todayUsually: Nice to have
  • “Do you have experience with Airbnb, vacation rental, or hotel-style turnovers?”

Turnovers run on a tight clock between guests, and it helps to know who has done them.

GuavaHire asks this todayUsually: Nice to have
  • “Do you have experience with deep cleans, move-out cleans, or first-time heavy cleans?”

Heavy cleans take a different pace and tools than a regular visit.

GuavaHire asks this todayUsually: Nice to have
  • “For janitorial crews: have you done floor care, such as stripping, sealing and waxing floors?”

Floor care is its own skill in commercial cleaning.

Set up with you in early accessUsually: Nice to have
  • “Do you prefer working on your own or with a team?”

Some companies send cleaners solo and some in pairs. Matching the preference keeps good people longer.

Hiring rules

What cleaning companies should know.

Rules for every job are in the fair hiring guide.

  • Run the same background check for everyone in a role, and judge every report by the same standard.

In-home work is why cleaning companies check records, and checking only some applicants, or weighing the same record differently, is evidence of discrimination.

EEOC and FTC: Background checks for employers

  • Before a background report costs someone the job, send them a copy with the FCRA summary of their rights and give them time to point out mistakes. If you still say no, send a final notice.

Reports can be wrong, or list someone else’s record, and the applicant gets to see it before it counts against them.

    FTC: Using consumer reports

General information, not legal advice; state rules can be stricter.
